Internet - great Revolution

No technical achievement since the discovery of electricity and how we can use it, has affected our society as much as the Internet. With the steam-machine and the electric-generator our society stepped into the "Industrial Revolution" and I am quite certain, future generations will call our time the "Digital Revolution".

There is no aspect of our life, which was not already changed through the Internet or which will be changed through the Internet. The way we get information, the way we inform ourselves about products, the way we buy products and amongst many other things, the way we communicate with each other.

Communication changed dramatically and the possibilities, offered by the Internet are endless. E-mail, instant messenger, icq, skype, web cameras and a multitude of other possibilities are available today and make it possible, to communicate with whoever we want almost at any time and in real time.

Many children, born after 1995 never even saw a "real"-letter, they do not know that not too long ago, you actually needed to write with your own hands on a piece of paper, put it in an envelope, buy a stamp and send it with the post, if you wanted to inform some friends or relatives about news in your life. And it is way beyond their understanding that it actually took 1-2 days, before the news arrived.

Today they are used to send an e-mail, using all kinds of abbreviations and attaching digital photographs or links. And this information reaches the addressee not the next day, but within parts of a second.

Telephone calls are also made over the Internet. Skype and similar programmes even offer the possibility to correspond with somebody via webcam. So you actually hear and see your partner.

All in all, the new possibilities to communicate are changing the lifestyle of our society. Everything gets faster, quicker and, most of the time, more efficient. Deals and Business, which took days to be agreed on, can now be handled within hours. Everybody is more or less 24 hours on stand-by, which obviously raises the stress level in our lives.

Maybe, a few years from now, we wish back the good old "Snail-Mail"!
